Small pox claims one, 45 affected in Satkhira jail, South Bangladesh



Dec 5, 2003: Small pox claimed one life and affected 45 other prisoners in the district jail during the last three days till today (Friday). The dead was identified as Indian national Abdul Hai Biswas. He died on Wednesday. Jail Super Alauddin Sarker, admitting the outbreak of small pox, told UNB that the affected prisoners were segregated in a separate ward and given treatment. Civil surgeon Dr SM Mostafa said a medical team was formed to provide treatment to the affected.

On an average, 800 prisoners and under-trial prisoners have been accommodated in the district jail everyday against its capacity of 90. (Source: UNB, December6, 2003).
